DEGW, the Lombardini22 brand specialising in workplaces, will be restyling the interiors of the headquarters of Hilti Italia Spa located in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan, in partnership with Atmos, the Lombardini22 Group brand commissioned to adjust the acoustics in all the spaces. The project area involved the ground floor and 2nd/3rd floors of a multi-tenant complex covering an overall area of 4300 m² encompassing 266 workstations.

The challenge facing DEGW was to fit out all the spaces without interrupting business operations. Consequently, the work was carried out one floor at a time, while staff carried on working: as soon as one area had been completed, it was time to move onto the next, and staff were temporarily moved to completed areas or premises where no work was going on.

This carefully gauged approach was based on a preliminary study of the client, its corporate standards and, above all, the real needs of the people who would be working in the offices.

New layout

DEGW responded by proposing a new stacking plan to redistribute corporate functions and departments in just the right way to make the workplace more functional and in line with the multinational’s global guidelines.

The ground floor holds meeting rooms separated by mobile walls that can be moved to create one large setting ideal for events or staff meetings.

The 2nd and 3rd floors hold the workstations (98 on the second floor and 168 on the third floor), so it was decided to incorporate height-adjustable ergonomic furniture to allow people to work either sitting down or standing up.

The main change introduced by DEGW concerns the new HUB areas located at focal points on the various business floors that also include various ancillary areas: Cooperation areas - places for holding informal meetings involving 3-4 people; Quiet areas for short meetings or operations involving 3-4 people; Concentration areas - phone booths used for short spaces of time; and, lastly, support stations set in open spaces for hosting temporary activities or available for mobile workers and passing guests.

Different types of space were studied for break periods too.

Colours, lights and sounds

DEGW chose colours and materials for the new spaces that would project the firm’s corporate identity.

The Hilti brand’s corporate red colour for some of the furniture, particularly in the welcome areas such as the reception, and materials with an industrial feel for the interaction areas: metallic red mesh for some of the walls, OSB (oriented strand board) for the shelves and chairs, wood for the furniture and finishes.

The break areas, on the other hand, are focused around shades of greed and also incorporate vegetation to make them feel more homely and welcoming.

Lighting was another important aspect of the project: a number of opaque partitions were replaced by glass walls to make the entire floor permeable and brightly lit. Atmos took care of the acoustics in the various spaces, guaranteeing the appropriate amount of privacy through special sealings, sound absorbing panels and textile floors.

The interiors were adapted to accommodate a more ‘agile’ approach and refurnished to create comfortable, ergonomic settings for working in a more organised way in a relaxing and familiar atmosphere.
